Saurabh Singhai, 26, boarded a train to Bhopal, his hometown, on September 3. But he never reached home. A complaint was lodged at Borivli police station by his colleagues.

The case was handed over to the crime branch of the Mumbai police. In the last week of October, the crime branch came to know that a body matching Singhai’s description had been found on the railway tracks near Igatpuri station the very day the 26-year-old had boarded the train.

Coming to know of it, Singhai’s family members from Bhopal rushed to Igatpuri. They were shown the belongings found on the body — among them was the ticket to Bhopal — and identified those as Singhai’s. But his body was not there. Igatpuri police said that they had buried the body the very next day. The post mortem report, issued by a local hospital, stated that the victim had died of cardiac respiratory failure.

The rule states that an unidentified body will have to be preserved for a month so that a family member/relative (if there is any) get time to claim it. A message has to be sent out describing the body, so that other police personnel can tally whether the description matches someone they are looking for. If the body remains unclaimed after a month, the cops can perform the last rites. But HM Patil, assistant police inspector, Igatpuri police station, said, “We operate out of a small town. There is no cold storage facility. Every time we come across an unidentified body, we bury it the next day.”

Family members of Singhai, who worked as a post-production professional with a private English news channel, refused to accept that he might have committed suicide. According to them, it was murder, and that was why the body was disposed of so fast. They have approached a Nashik court, seeking that the the body be exhumed for them to perform the last rites.

They suspected that he had been “pushed to death by relatives of a Bhopal girl, with whom Singhai was having an affair.” Sachin Singhai, elder brother of the deceased, said, “The girl’s family did not approve of their relationship. I am certain of one thing. My brother did not commit suicide. Something very sinister happened on September 3. I will not rest in peace until I have learnt the truth.”
