As the mercury continues to rise; winter finally seems to be on its way out with both day and night recording above normal temperatures.

According to officials at the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune, the trend of rise in temperatures, especially during the day, would continue in the coming days.

As far as the diurnal variation (change in temperature from day to night) is concerned, Met officials say it is nothing unusual, but indicative of end of winter.

“This is the transition period and the diurnal variation is normal for this time of the year in Pune. It indicates that winter is on its way out,” said a senior official.

However, MET officials said that temperatures would dip by about 2°C for a couple of days in the end of February.

IMD director for weather, Sunita Devi, said that there is an anti-cyclone over Pune region which is causing subsidence that is leading to clear sky conditions.

“Currently, the departure from normal is 2°C, with Pune being hotter than expected. The increased impact of solar radiation due to clear sky condition is leading to rise in day temperatures.

Besides, there is some moisture in the atmosphere, which is trapping the heat, leading to rise in night temperatures. The current trend is expected to continue till a few days with temperatures continuing to be on the higher side,” she said.

The maximum temperature in the city on Saturday was recorded at 32.2°C, which is 2 degrees above normal; while the minimum temperature was 12.2°C, which is again 2 degrees more than normal.

“While we don’t expect much change in night temperatures, the day temperature is slated to rise up to 35°C over the next 2-3 days. Currently, there is a western disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas. After this moves towards northeast areas, we expect a dip in both day and night temperatures for a couple of days,” said Devi.
