This is one place in the city where the godly customers don’t mind queuing up for hours and wait for their turn. This is the shop which is flooded with people during the rain for raincoats and umbrellas, during winters for sweaters, jackets, jumpsuits and monkey caps and for suncoats and caps during summer.

Ramesh Dyeing with branches at Budhwar Peth, Kothrud, Sinhagad Road, Hadapsar and Aundh began in a humble 10x10 sq ft shop in Sadashiv Peth. Today, the shop is spread over 1,600 sq feet of area with three floors and boasts of 52 salesmen.

It was 1958, when four brothers Babu Bhai, Pranlal, Houshilal and Jayantilal started a shop for dyeing and printing. It soon became popular as Ramesh Dyeing. But three decades after successful running the business, they realised that the textile industry was undergoing a change.

The solution stood clear in front of them—the need to diversify their business and start something new.“They realised that they needed to do something different as per change in market trends. After much brainstorming, they came up with the idea of making school bags for children,” say Girish Shah (son of Jayantilal) who with his brother Milind were the only ones who were interested in taking their father’s business forward as the other children went ahead and pursued their own careers.

“My cousins pursued careers of their own choice by becoming a doctor, engineer or architect. It was in 1985, when Milind and I took our business to a new level. Today, we produce school bags of different materials accompanied with umbrellas, raincoats and jerkins,” adds Girish.

According to the Shahs, people today need quality material at reasonable rates. “Because of the rise in the earning capacity, they don’t mind shelling some extra bucks for good quality material. They are just not ready to compromise with the quality.

Earlier, we used to manufacture plastic raincoats, but today nobody prefers them. Since 1991, we started manufacturing high quality rain wear,” says Girish. The raw material is bought from Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai.

Today, they have various kinds of fancy and trendy rain coats for women. One can find a top and skirt pattern or a regular pant-shirt one. The price ranges from Rs380 to Rs550.For tiny tots one can find school bags with their favourite cartoon characters such as Hannah Montana, Ben 10 or Mickey Mouse.

Kushal and Prathamesh, the children of Girish and Milind respectively also help their fathers with the latest trends and ideas that would appeal to the youth.

To add value to their claim of only high quality goods, this is one of the few stores in the city to offer a one-year warranty for the free repair of items purchased from them.
