From Jeffrey Archer to Chetan Bhagat, young urbanites are taking to the written word like never before

Even as the city wilts under the oppressive heat, Mumbaikars are  anxiously waiting for the monsoons to bring relief. Lazy Sunday mornings with rain pelting outside, lush green trees…all this is on its way. It's the perfect season to grab a hot cup of cocoa and your favourite book, and curl up on the couch. And bookstores across the city are gearing up for an increase in sales.

The one book that's flying off the shelves is The 3 Mistakes Of My Life by Chetan Bhagat. Aayush Soni, 22, finished the book in five hours and says that he found an instant connect with the story as it focuses on the dreams and aspirations of young India. Nilesh Palekar, from Landmark bookstore, says, “The 3 Mistakes can easily be called the best-seller of this season. It sold around 150 copies on the first  day and since then we've been selling at least 85 copies per day.”

Another book that's selling like hot-cakes this season is Jeffrey Archer's A Prisoner Of Birth. Says Seema Hariharan, 24, who has just finished the last chapter: “It's an awesome book. I loved it.”

It's the story of a man who is wrongly accused of murdering his friend. Archer doesn't disappoint — and is in every way 'unputdownable'. “A Prisoner Of Birth is among our top five best-sellers,” says Tanaz Lakdawala of Crossword Bookstore.

For those who are not too particular about reading the latest books, Prey by Michael Crichton is a fast paced thriller that revolves around what happens when technology goes wrong. Shibashis Haldar, 23, who is currently reading the book, says that it's spell-binding, but too futuristic to be believable.

Brida by Paulo Coelho and Superstar India by Shobhaa De have made it to the best-seller list at Oxford, Landmark and Crossword Bookstores.

And if fiction is not your cup of tea, there are plenty of non-fiction titles to choose from. Top on the list is Cold Steel by Tim Bouquet. This biography of Laxmi Mittal serves as an inspiring guide to those who want to know the secret to his success. Of course, The Secret by Rhonda Byrne continues to be an all-time favourite.  So, add a trip to the bookstore to your to-do list the next time you go shopping.
