The Congress is on a high. The Opposition can shout, yell and disrupt the assembly or council proceedings as much as it wants to. This is because the results of the municipal council elections have given it an edge over other parties.

This was the message from the Congress party chief in Maharashtra, Manikrao Thakre after the results of the nagar parishad (municipal council) elections began pouring in on Monday.

Out of 2,992 seats that went to polls across Maharashtra, the Congress won 676 seats and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) 1,100. The Opposition parties, the BJP and Sena, have each bagged 325 seats and 189 seats respectively with local parties bagging 256 seats.

The seats were spread across 93 towns and small cities and the Congress has won 33, the NCP 30 and the Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have a majority in four each.  Local parties are leading in six towns across the state.

Thakare said the results clearly showed that all anti-Congress sentiments spewed by the Opposition and highlighted by the media had had little effect on the outcome of the election. “People voted for the party that they believe will bring progress and prosperity. Concerns over price rise, petrol price rise, corruption and Anna Hazare’s crusade were not the issues that people thought about while casting their votes,” said Thakre.

He said the Congress, too, was against corruption. “We believe that we need a bill passed by parliament, something that Hazare is not backing,” he added.

Asked if this was a victory for chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, he agreed. But quickly added it was also a victory for the Congress agenda, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
