About twenty percent of the women members of Thane police run risk of developing heart disease due to stress at work, a medical check up conducted by a private hospital has revealed.

A suburban Thane hospital organised a medical check-up camp on March 8 for women members of Thane police. Out of 61 police constables who underwent the investigations, 7 were detected with symptom of hypertension, high blood pressure and diabetes while 5 of them with symptoms of cardiac disease.

Dr Nirmal Jain, interventional cardiologist of Vertex Hospital which conducted the check-up, said doctors found that 12 women constables (out of 61 who underwent investigations) showed symptoms related to heart disease and are referred to further medical investigations.

Hectic duty schedules during elections, festivals and pressure of maintaining law and order are the causative factors for the rising stress levels in the police force, the findings revealed.
