The four terror suspects arrested by the Aurangabad Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) were remanded to police custody for seven days by Aurangabad Railway Court judge RS Tedgaonkar on Saturday.

In a joint move, the Aurangabad, Akola and Nanded ATS teams, comprising of 18-20 officers, arrested four terror suspects from Degloornaka in Nanded on Friday.

It is suspected that the four youths, Mohammed Sadiq Mohammed Farooque, 27, Mohammed Muzzamil Abdul Gani, 29, Mohammed Ilyas Mohammed Akbar, 28, and Mohammad Irfan Mohammad Gaus, 25, have connections with the Indian Mujahideen (IM). ATS sleuths suspect that they were planning to attack right-wing Hindu leaders during the Ganesh festival, beginning on September 19.

ATS sources revealed that they got information about the four during the interrogation of the 11 suspects arrested in Bangalore and Hubli recently. The ATS kept a strict watch on their movements for two days prior to their arrest.

Navinchandra Reddy, the Aurangabad ATS chief, refused to divulge any information at this stage as the interrogation process has not been completed yet, and the search for three more absconding suspects is underway.

Moreover, the ATS is maintaining secrecy as the Marathwada region has a strong network of SIMI and IM sleeper cells in Aurangabad, Jalna, Beed and Nanded districts. In the meantime, security arrangements have been enhanced in Parbhani, where RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat will conduct meetings from September 14 to 17.

The police suspects that the arrested youths were also involved in planning of the low-intensity bomb blast in Pune last month. The ATS recovered some objectionable literature, one bogus passport and one country-made revolver from one of the houses in Nanded, sources said.
