Tata Power has set up a solar power plant of 3 MW in Mulshi, 40 km from Pune, with an investment of Rs42 crore on 12 acres. The plant has generated 7.3 lakh units of power during the first two months after becoming operational in April this year.

Deputy general manager Mahesh Paranjpe told the media that around 13,000 kWh (kilo watt hour unit) power is generated by the project every day. Annually, the power generation would be 4.5 million units.

He said the annual plant load factor (PLF) - the measure of average capacity utilisation, calculated by comparing the actual output of the power plant with its maximum capacity - of the Mulshi solar plant is 18%. During monsoon, the PLF is expected to be 12% to 13%. Thus the power generation would not significantly reduce even during the monsoon.

He said the Mulshi solar power plant was set up in nine months. It is expected to be operational for the next 25 years.

It is also the largest grid connected solar plant in the state and one of the largest in the country. Power generated in this project is sold to Tata Power for distribution to meet the renewable power obligations under Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) related to its customers in Mumbai. The project is developed with technical assistance by Tata BP Solar.

Additional general manager, M Natrajan said monocrystalline silicon photovoltaic technology is used for the project. In this project, 16,686 solar photovoltaic modules are set up. Direct current (DC) power is generated in the project. It is converted into alternative current (AC) and supplied to the grid.

Tata Power set up its first solar power plant of 100 kW (kilowatt) at Walwan in Lonavla in 1996. The company is implementing a solar power project of 25 MW in Mithapur, Gujarat which is likely to start commercial operations in December 2011. The company has signed a power purchase agreement with Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd for 25 years with a tariff of Rs15 per unit for the first 12 years.

Tata Power has installed generation capacity of 3,120 MW and plans to increase it to 25,000 MW by 2017. It intends to have a 20% to 25% contribution from 'clean power sources' which include a mix of hydro, solar, wind, geothermal and waste gas generation.
