Under fire for a long time over irregularities and incidence of rising corruption in the exam department, controller of examinations (CoE), Shivaji Ahire, has finally resigned from the post.

Ahire has been at the receiving end after his department staffers were caught forging marksheets and making changes in roster.

Insiders in university circles said that the theory doing the rounds was that such things cannot happen without complicity of the head of examinations. It is also said that Ahire was incapable of keeping a check on such scams that took place in his department.

Sanjay Chahande, acting vice chancellor of the University of Pune (UoP), said that Ahire’s abrupt resignation was due to his health condition. “The letter that he sent me states that he will be on sick leave due to his deteriorating health condition. He has stated his incapability to continue with the post of controller of examinations,” said Chahande.

Dr Captain CM Chitale, who is the head of management sciences department, has been given the charge of CoE. “Captain Chitale has been given an additional charge of the department from February 15. It is an interim arrangement,” clarified Chahande. Despite repeated calls, Ahire wasn’t available for comment. Besides Chitale, two senior UoP officials, i.e. deputy registrar, Vitthal Sathe, and assistant registrar, Pramod Bhadakwade, have also been transferred to exam department.

Chahande has been promising reforms in UoP’s exam department lately and also spoke of looking at the issue of pending transfers. When asked if the fresh team was a part of the reforms, Chahande denied it. “The reforms I spoke about were computerisation of work and filling up vacant posts to stop outsourcing. I consider the transfers and appointment as an administrative decision, no connection with reforms,” he added.

Meanwhile Ahire’s resignation has become a fodder for gossip in university circles as UoP’s examination department had been in the news for all the wrong reasons. The most prominent cases were show-cause notices to deputy registrar and staffer for changing entries in a marksheet and the arrest of two staffers for their involvement in issuing forged marksheets to Iranian students.
