Maharashtra water resources minister Sunil Tatkare and former minister of state for urban development department (UDD) today told the Adarsh inquiry commission that he is “not  even remotely concerned with alleged irregularities” pertaining to Adarsh Society.

Former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh was in charge of the UDD portfolio. Tatkare held the charge twice — between October 18, 1999 to March 23, 2002, and from May 30, 2002 to June 11, 2002.  He said as per rules of business of the state government, there have been standing orders issued by the CM dividing the work of UDD between the CM and him.

In his affidavit in reply to summons by the commission, Tatkare said he only agreed to a suggestion to invite objections from affected parties for deleting the reservation of BEST depot land to grant additional Floor Space Index (FSI) to Adarsh Society.

Tatkare said a meeting took place on July 14, 2004, which was attended by UDD, revenue and collectorate officials, and MLC Kanhaiyalal Gidwani and annexed a note on the meeting to his affidavit. “The meeting discussed the issue of granting additional FSI as requested by Adarsh CHS Limited. However, the Society’s request was not found feasible,” he stated, adding that it was “negated”.

The note stated that at the meeting, Gidwani requested additional FSI of adjoining land owned by the state government which is used as an access by the BEST for its Backbay bus depot.

Principal secretary Ramanand Tiwari “clarified” that as per a recent modification in the development plan, the width of Captain Prakash Pethe Marg adjoining the depot, had been reduced and the area was reserved for a residential zone, helipad, garden and a BEST depot.

The noted stated that “in order to sort out the issue”, Tiwari stated that the Society shall approach the government to delete the BEST depot reservation as per the Maharashtra Regional Town Planning Act which includes inviting objections from persons/public bodies affected by the proposed modification.

“The Hon’ble minister (Tatkare) and other officials agreed for the same,” it stated.
