Students boycott convocation attended by Jairam Ramesh in Mumbai

The students boycotted the ceremony at Mumbai's Tata Institute of Social Sciences as a mark of protest against the proposed Jaitapur nuclear plant in coastal Konkan and the POSCO steel project in Orissa.

A group of around 20 students today boycotted the convocation ceremony at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) here, as a mark of protest against the proposed Jaitapur nuclear plant in coastal Konkan and POSCO steel project in Orissa.

Union environment minister Jairam Ramesh was the chief guest at the convocation. Around 250 students from different courses (including those who boycotted the function) graduated today, earning their masters' in social work.

Besides the boycott, some students protested by wearing black bands, carrying placards and posters, and sporting anti-nuclear message carrying t-shirts and caps.

"After the convocation ceremony is over, students will have an opportunity to talk to the minister and submit their memorandum," TISS sources said.
