A significant drop of 7.68% has been recorded in the overall passing percentage for standard X exam of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE), the results of which were announced on Friday.

At a press conference on Friday afternoon, MSBSHSE chairperson Ujwaladevi Patil said a total of 16,32,748 students appeared for the exam  from Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Mumbai, Kolhapur, Amravati and Latur divisions, of which 11,59,907 students passed.

According to Patil, the results were announced on the basis of the ‘best-of-five’ policy of the board. The passing percentage of the state this year is 71.04% as compared to 78.72% in 2010.
Overall, 22.50% of the students achieved distinction, 35.16% passed  in the first division and 33.19% in the second division.
Pune division topped the pecking order with 80.39%, followed closely by Mumbai at 80.03%, while Kolhapur, which had topped the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination this year, is in third place at 79.76%.

Mathematics has again proved to be the major bugbear for students, with only 72.28% managing to pass the subject, while another 87.39% students passed in science.

The overall pass percentage in mathematics went down by 8.82% over last year, while in science it went down by 5.57% compared to the result in 2010.

The physically challenged from all categories deserve accolades as their passing percentage was 75.48%. A total of 5,514 appeared for the examinations and 4,164 passed. Among the special children, autistic students did the best. Of the nine students that appeared from the state, six passed. According to Patil the mark sheets will be available in schools on June 27.
The pass percentage of the state was dragged down by 7.68% percent this year due to a poor show by Amravati  division. Due to stringent anti-cheating measures this year, Amravati
division, which had boasted of the  highest pass percentage last  year (86%) secured the lowest percentage in the state (43%) in 2011.

Continuing last year’s trend, girls fared better than boys with the overall pass percentage among girls being 74.06% and among boys 68.58%.
