Former IPS officer owes Rs15.8 lakh rent to government.
After seven years of illegal stay, former IPS officer YP Singh has finally vacated his official accommodation.
Singh, who retired in February 2004, has been illegally staying in a 750 sq ft flat at Nariman Point.
Singh owes Rs15.80 lakh towards the penalty rent till September 30, 2011. After the competent authority, who is a deputy collector with quasi-judicial authority, issued an order on October 3, Singh vacated the flat two days ago. However, the dues are yet to be cleared.
Singh said he continued his stay in the flat on moral and legal grounds as the government did not pay his provident fund for 7 years.
“The PF amount will be more than Rs30 lakh and it has been held back due to a forgery made by home department officials. Secondly, the government speeded up the procedure only after I exposed the Adarsh scam,” he said.
“Finally, I have vacated the flat as it was too small for me now. We have shifted to a Worli residence, which my wife got as a central government employee.”
Former IAS officer Ashok Lall is still staying at a 1,750 sq ft flat even though he retired in October 2003. His dues are more than Rs10 lakh. The competent authority served a notice to him to vacate the flat in July 2011.
Another high profile IAS officer Uttam Khobragade, who retired on May 31, is yet to vacate his 1,750 sq ft flat at Yashodhan even after the lapse of the grace period of three months in August. His has to pay Rs1.80 lakh. The PWD has transferred the case to the competent authority. “I am in the process of vacating the house and the dues will be paid once the government settles my dues,” Khobragade said.
Inspector General of Police (Konkan range) Parambir Singh and retired additional director general BN Raut are other two IPS officers are two other squatters. Singh, who took over as Konkan range IG nearly two years ago, has not vacated his 1,665 sq ft residence at Suniti at Narimant Point even after the lapse of the extended period. Raut, who retired early this year, has been served the notice last month after he failed to vacate the flat at Nalambari at Nariman Point.
Meanwhile, the Public Works Department (PWD) has created a fresh list of five babus who are yet to vacate their accommodation within the stipulated time after retirement or transfer.
