If a proposal floated by the principal of KPB Hinduja College is accepted, soon his students will be attending lectures at NM College in Vile Parle or Podar College in Matunga.

The college has proposed a first-of-its-kind initiative: a students and teachers’ exchange programme for commerce colleges in the city.

The college has sent proposal letters to more than 12 commerce colleges, asking them to permit the exchange of teachers and students in the first term of the academic year for the final year classes.

The proposal states that teachers from a college can pick any topic from a particular subject and teach it in Hinduja College, and the same topic will be taught at the other college by a teacher from the host college.

Similarly, a group of 10 students will attend lectures in the designated college and vice versa. The proposal also appeals to colleges to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) and to settle the schedule of such a programme.

According to TA Shiware, principal of the college, an exchange programme does not always have to be between colleges which are outside the country or the city.

“Our students should be exposed to such options. It will be a different experience for them and even the teachers,” Shiware said. “This kind of arrangement is convenient and also serves the purpose.”

Shiware has chalked out specific programme for each college. For instance, the college intends to share its BMS curriculum with NM College, BFM with HR College in Churchgate, BBI with Khalsa College in Matunga, accounts with Podar College, etc.

Other commerce colleges also seem keen to give the idea a try.

“We have received the proposal. It is a very progressive move and will benefit students,” Sunil Mantri, principal of NM college, said.

“With the implementation of the credit system, such programmes will enhance the students’ knowledge.”

Mantri said they may rethink the proposal if it caused any kind of inconveniences to the students.

“Such a programme will give teachers an opportunity to update and improve themselves. They will try to be innovative when they are dealing with a new set of students and that will make them more accountable,” said principal Madhavi Pethe of ML Dahanukar College, Vile Parle.

However, Pethe said they are yet to receive the proposal.
