Shiv Sena’s changed priorities in the wake of upcoming Zilla Parishad (ZP) elections seem to have put the anti-Jaitapur Nuclear Power Plant (JNPP) struggle in a jeopardy.

The planned jail bharo agitation in and around JNPP site area on January 24 and 25 has been postponed till the time ZP elections get over, that is February 7.

The Sena, which had been supporting and actively participating in the anti-JNPP, has told the local activists its inability to participate in the struggle because the party will be busy campaigning in the area.

"It was planned on January 24 and 25. However, we were asked to postpone the agitation by Sena activists because of the elections," said Pravin Gavankar of Janhit Sewa Samiti, a local body representing the villagers. He said that the Sena has told the villagers that it would not be able to participate in the jail bharo agitation because of the election code of conduct.

As per the initial plan, residents of villages in and around JNPP site were to participate in the jail bharo agitation and would have remained in jail until the construction work at the project site was stopped completely. It had also planned to boycott the official flag-hoisting ceremony at all gram panchayats.

Gavankar added that the villagers may also give up the plan to boycott the official flag-hoisting ceremony, which was planned earlier. "However, we will go ahead with our plan to hold a seminar against nuclear power in Sakhri-Natye village," he said.

In spite of repeated attempts, the local Sena MLA Rajan Salvi could not be reached on phone. Senior Sena leader Ramdas Kadam denied having any information about the jail bharo agitation. "I am hearing this for the first time that such an agitation was planned. I cannot comment whether the agitation was postponed because of the Sena," said Kadam.
