After the evidence was placed before the BMC, the BMC health officials seized the sonography machine at the Saki Naka-based JP hospital on Monday.
BMC’s health department will file a criminal case against Dr Ivan Rocha, the consulting gynecologist at JP hospital. He is also an assistant honorary professor at the Kurla Bhabha hospital.
“We have sealed the sonography machine. We will soon file a criminal complaint in court under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act (PCPNDT),” said Dr Asha Advani, the special officer for BMC’s family welfare department.
The sting was carried out by activist Varsha Deshpande, who runs Lekh Ladki Abhiyan. “We had a decoy pregnant woman who called Dr Rocha for an appointment saying that they wanted to determine the sex of the foetus and he readily agreed,” said Kailash Jadhav, who works with Deshpande. The activists also found out that no documentation was done for the sonography conducted on the woman, which is required under the PCPNDT Act.
“Dr Rocha told the decoy woman that she was having a girl and asked her to come for an abortion. It is all on video,”said Jadhav.
When contacted, Dr Rocha said, “I do not want to talk to anyone.”
Dr Advani said that the BMC officials will go to Kurla Bhabha to find out more about what Dr Rocha was doing. “We are going to demand his removal from the post of professor,” said Desphande.
