Commuters on the Western and Central rail lines had a harrowing time on Sunday as suburban services on both the Central and Western railway were disrupted. While an engine failure near Kurla station affected Harbour line trains, the closure of both the slow lines for maintenance between Santa Cruz and Mahim lined up suburban trains on Western railway.

Railway officials on Central railway said that an engine of a freight train failed near Kurla on the Harbour line mid-day on Sunday.

Another engine was provided, and the train cleared the Kurla yard by 1:30pm. Harbour line trains were diverted on the main line during the period. Freight trains coming from and on their way to the Mumbai Port Trust intersect the Harbour line near Kurla station, seldom delaying suburban services.

“Travelling by train on Sunday is becoming a problem every week. Every weekend, there is some problem or the other on the railway lines,” said commuter Ankita Joshi, who was at Kurla’s platform 8 and wanted to catch a train for Cotton Green station.

On the Western line, suburban trains lined up one after the other, as the railways had shut both slow line tracks for Sunday maintenance between 10.35am and 3:35pm. During this time period, all slow line trains ran on the fast corridor and 12-car slow trains halted twice at Khar and Mahim stations.

Jatin Gala, a commuter on the Western railway said, “Trains simply didn’t seem to be moving on this line in the afternoon. I was stuck for nearly half an hour near Jogeshwari.”
