Doctors of the Sahyadri Hospital in Hadapsar have successfully performed a rare surgery by removing a huge fibroid weighing 6 kg from a woman during childbirth. A press statement released by the hospital on Tuesday stated that the mother and baby were recovering well.

The fibroid was diagnosed when the patient was pregnant for the first time. As the pregnancy grew, the fibroid was also seen to be growing fast. At 36 weeks, the size of the fibroid was 22x22x18 cm. The doctors decided to run sutures (a stitch made when sewing up a wound) at a junction between the uterus and the fibroid. The baby was delivered through a lower segment incision. Although a myomectomy (removal of the fibroid) during pregnancy is never done, the decision to remove the fibroid was taken because a non-removal could have led to more complications for the mother, the statement said.

In a surgery lasting
two-and-a-half hours, the fibroid was removed and sent for a histopathological
examination.
