Rain fury in Thane: Several areas flooded, people marooned

Heavy rains lashed various parts of this district adjacent to Mumbai flooding several low lying areas leaving scores of people marooned, district authorities said today.

According to officials, several parts of Thane (East) remained submerged under water since last night and the occupants were shifted to safer locations like schools and temples following heavy rains for last two days.

The Masawan bridge was submerged under water and traffic held up in the locality as a result of heavy downpour, police said. Also, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and other low lying areas in the district reported continuous showers and flooding in the regions with rivers swelling very fast.

Also, the slab of a building in Mumbra crashed late last night following incessant rains after which the dangerous structure was vacated. It is likely to be pulled down today, officials said.

Meanwhile, in a late night development a tanker carrying IPA chemical skidded off the road on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway and overturned at Sativali village.

Manor police said though there is not much of a danger the firemen were on site and experts had been summoned to plug the leakage resulting from the incident.
