The railways and state government on Thursday kept shifting the responsibility of who should be in-charge of arranging ambulances for railway accident victims to each other.

The railways suggested that the state should arrange for the ambulances while the state told the railways that they can tie up several private hospitals located outside stations for speedy treatment of the victims. The suggestions were made while hearing a public interest litigation filed by Sameer Zaveri who lost his legs in an accident.

Advocate Suresh Kumar appearing for the railways said “We accept that accidents have been taking place, even though several measures have been put in place. But in seven other states like Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, the state has joint hands with ambulance providers. The Maharashtra government should also adopt the same policy.”

Replying to the suggestion, advocate for the state said “We have given a list of hospitals, many of them are private, which are close to the stations with whom the railways can tie up so that the victims can be moved immediately.”

Division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice GS Godbole directed the parties to work out a common plan by the next committee meeting. It also directed the lawyers of the petitioner to be present during the meeting, after Zaveri alleged that the state government and railways were not serious about the issue and no proper solution was being worked out.

The western railways also informed that a new helpline number ‘1276’ is operational for commuters to get in touch for any kind of help. The high court adjourned the hearing till next month.
