A 36-year-old quack, who duped a youth of Rs91,000 under the pretext of curing paralysis and leukoderma within three months, has been arrested by the Cantonment police.

Yalapa Durgapa Vaidu (36), hailing from Jaisinghpur in Shirur, ran his medical clinic ‘Shree Golul Ayurvedic’ from a rented room at Aurora Towers in Camp by paying Rs25,000 monthly rent and represented himself with a fake name of Dr Shinde.

The incident came to light when Tulsidas Rathod (24) of a boy’s hostel in Wadgaonsheri and hailing from Karnataka lodged a police complaint.

Sub-inspector Balwant Gavit is investigating the case.
Senior-inspector Sushma Chavan told DNA, “The complainant, working as a customer care executive with a reputed company, was suffering from paralysis since four years. In October, the suspect’s agent ‘accidentally’ met him and informed about curing the ailment within three months with money back guarantee if it is uncureable.

“The suspect advised Rathod to buy chavanprash, Kesari Kal, element power and other tonics and demanded Rs80,000. The victim paid him Rs91,000. After preparing a mixture of these tonics, the quack advised Rathod to consume it daily and warned him to not inform anyone about the treatment.

“After consuming the ‘medicine’ for 61 days with no result, Rathod visited the clinic and found it shut down. He came to know that the suspect had duped many people with his three agents, including a woman.”

According to the police official, Rathod and seven others approached the police and a trap was laid with the help of constables Avinash Badhe, Prakash Desai and Rahul Ghadge. The suspect was nabbed from Naaz hotel in Camp on Saturday.

“The suspect is in 4-day police custody. He doesn’t hold a medical degree. He visits the city for 3-4 months, con people and flee,” she said.
