A section of Tamilians and Bengalis based in the city have welcomed the results of elections to legislative assemblies in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

While talking to DNA, some Tamilians and Bengalis said the new governments would give impetus to development in the two states.

Cultural secretary of the Bangiya Sanskriti Samsad, Arun Chattopadhyay, said the change of government in West Bengal was imminent. “The writing on the wall for the Left Front (LF) government was there after the last Lok Sabha elections. So we are not surprised that the LF has been routed in the polls,” he said.

However, Chattopadhyay said that Mamata Banerjee has to live up to the expectations of the people of Bengal. The first year would be crucial as by then the people would be able to gauge how the new government would work. An official in a private company, Ramesh Burman, expressed hope that the new government would usher in development in the state.

Meanwhile, former secretary of the Pune City Tamil Sangam, S Sekar, said that the win of J Jayalalithaa-led All India Anna Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) would give impetus to industrial growth. “The earlier government was distributing free television and gifts which was not well-received by many in Tamil Nadu. I hope Jayalalithaa won’t continue with this. I also hope that she continues with mid-day meals for the poor in temples,” he said.
Commenting on the poll results in Kerala, Hari Narayanan, editor of Pravasi Shabdam, a Malayalam magazine, said the trend is that after every five years there is a change of guard in Kerala.

“The only difference this time is that the ruling coalition lost by a slender margin. The new United Democratic Front (UDF) government should be more cautious and should constantly be on its toes as the opposition would keep them under tremendous pressure,” he opined.
