With the appointment of a three-member selection committee, that reviews applications for the post of vice chancellor, the process of appointing a new VC at the University of Pune (UoP) is expected to gather speed now. The VC’s appointment is done in accordance with the Maharashtra University Act, 1994.
According to the Act, the selection procedure requires formation of a three-member selection committee. The committee consists of a nominee by the chancellor, a nominee by state government’s higher and technical education ministry and a nominee by the members of the management and academic council.
On October 8, the UoP management and academic council held a joint meeting and nominated Dr Ram Deshpande, director, Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC), Bangalore, on the committee.
However, nominations by the state government and the governor were pending. But on Thursday, sources said that the chancellor had nominated Mukul Mudgal, retired chief justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, on the committee.
The state government’s nominee is Sanjeev Kumar, principal secretary of higher and technical education, Maharashtra.
Vasudev Gade, director, Board of College and University Development (BCUD), confirmed the news, adding that the varsity is yet to decide on a date to invite applications for the post.
“The names of retired justice Mukul Mudgal and principal secretary Sanjeev Kumar have been communicated. Now that the names have been finalised, applications would soon be invited for the VC’s post and the selection procedure would begin. But we are yet to get a time schedule,” Gade said.
