Pune police slap MCOCA on six rioting suspects

This is the second instance wherein the city police have invoked the stringent Act against suspects involved in rioting cases.

The Pune police on Wednesday slapped the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), 1999, on six suspects for rioting and attempt to murder in the October 21 Dias Plot slum area case in Swargate area.

The suspects Rafique Shaikh, Afjal Shaikh, Saddam Shaikh, Firoj Shaikh, Mudassar alias Sonu Khan and Munwar alias Monu Khan were arrested on October 22 and weapons were recovered.

This is the second instance wherein the city police have invoked the stringent Act against suspects involved in rioting cases.

Earlier, the law was invoked against suspects of the Bibewadi rioting case.

According to the police, on October 21 in the Dias Plot slum area, the suspects had beaten up one Krushna Londhe with sharp weapons and sticks and inflict serious injuries on him. Lodhe’s relative Gowardhan Dattatray Khude had lodged a complaint with the Swargate police station.

Taking cognisance of the criminals’ history, additional commissioner of police (south region) SG Kumbhar had issued the order to assistant commissioner of police Abhay Yeola of Swargate division to apply the Act on the suspects.

Share broker held for Rs1.87 crore fraud
The Dattawadi police on Tuesday arrested a share broker for allegedly duping a woman to the tune of Rs1.87 crore by promising huge returns on share trading. The arrested suspect has been identified as Ashish Vilas Pundalik (38) of Sahakarnagar.

Medha Mayur Naik of Parvati Industrial Estate lodged a police complaint. According to police, the incident took place between March 2007 and February 2011. Pundalik approached Naik for investing in shares through Arihant Capital Market Ltd for huge returns but as she did not receive the promised amount, she lodged a complaint last month. Some more suspects are yet to be arrested.  Pundalik was remanded in police custody till November 4.
