Contents of the state police’s annual report for 2010, released on Thursday by the state crime records bureau, give cold comfort to citizens in the state, cutting across all strata of society.

It indicates a rising incidence of house break-ins and cyber crimes, and an abysmal detection rate.

The 1,000-page annual report, ‘Crime in Maharashtra-2010’, a study of crimes committed over 3 years, notes that in 2010 there were 20,338 incidents of house break-ins and robbery, a 4% increase over the previous year. However, the detection rate is as low as 33%, and a mere 21% of the stolen valuables, estimated at Rs364 crore, were recovered.

It also admits to a 52% increase in cyber crime cases in the state, compared to the previous year, and a 42% increase in crimes against women. In another shocker, the report states that 92% cases of atrocities against women are pending in various courts in the state.

Simultaneously, there was a 30% rise in atrocities against Scheduled Tribes and Castes, 13% rise in incidence of child abuse, and a 7% increase in murders, attempts to murder, dowry deaths, culpable homicide, riots and dacoities.

Cheating cases have increased by 8.9%, and cases of sexual harassment were up by 7.4%.  But there was a letup on two fronts: crimes related to fake currency decreased by 18.6% and those involving juvenile children were down by 8%.

Efforts of various regional transport offices, traffic engineers, local government bodies and highway security agencies seem to have had little effect on the road accident rates and resultant casualties in the state.

Despite massive awareness and penal drives, more than 14,000 deaths and 48,000 injuries were attributed to road accidents throughout the state in 2010. Compared to 2009, there were 1,000 more fatalities and 1,500 injuries in road accidents.
