The army has served a notice on slum dwellers at Padalwasti on Aundh Road in Khadki, to vacate the land by Sunday.

On April 21, army men visited the Padalwasti slums and put up notices stating that the land was theirs and it needed to be vacated by 6 pm on April 24. On Saturday morning, at least 300 slum dwellers from Padalwasti slums situated at survey number 37 (A) of Aundh Road, Khadki, stopped army personnel from conducting a survey near their dwellings.

The residents of the area claimed that they have been paying taxes to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for the last 30 years. They wondered why the army had not taken any action all these years. Spokesperson of the Republican Party of India (Bahujan Mahasangh), Vijay Bansode, in a communique; said that the homes belonged to the Dalit community.

“The people are scared because of the army notice. They have been living here for the last 50 years,” Bansode said.
Bansode said that a private builder had started a project in the area and was trying to grab the land with the help of the army.

“The builder is keen to construct a road in the area. The builder also does not want a slum in the vicinity of his project.”  RPI leader, Parshuram Wadekar, told DNA, “The PMC has provided all facilities to the slum dwellers for the last three decades. We will not stop our battle.” A resident of the slum, Vishal Shedge, said, “We have been in a tense situation for the last two days after the army sent us notices. We have decided to take a stay order from the district court.”

Shedge said that he was born in the slum and that they had been paying taxes to the PMC.

Khadki Cantonment Board (KCB) president, Brigadier Balraj Singh, said, “We have been issuing notices to the people for last 15 years to vacate the land. The residents of the area had gone to the civil court and lost their case. We also have a copy of the judgement in that case. This is army land and that is why we have served a notice on them,” Singh said.
