Are you amongst those who prefer to self-medicate rather than spending money for visiting doctors for minor problems like sore eyes or persistent cough? Then, here is some news that you could use. Warje’s Mai Mangeshkar Hospital has recently started a ‘Suhrud’ out-patient department (OPD) targeting such patients.

The OPD that runs on a daily basis from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm works on the concept of ‘Rs10 OPD’ services.

Pediatrician and hospital administrator Dr Surpriya Kulekar explained, “The idea of Suhrud OPD is to make more people take treatment from qualified doctors than try home remedies. It also eliminates the need to see specialists for small problems like eye pain, fever, flu, knee pain etc. The reason why people self medicate is because they don’t wish to spend money on expensive doctors or wait in queues.’’

She added that by paying Rs10, a person gets to consult a family doctor plus gets basic medicines for three days at no extra cost. There is no income criteria for patients and anyone can walk into their clinic without hesitation.

“Our doctors will give them generic medicines at no cost and it is better than self-medication. If people take anti-biotics indiscriminately without consulting doctors, they develop resistance which is a serious issue. Such OPDs would help to bring down antibiotic abuse amongst people and popularise idea of seeking professional help for small issues,’’ said surgeon Dr Shriniwas Deshpande.

Pressing health problems aside, the Suhrud OPD offers its services to those who just need a friendly advice from a doctor.
