Civic activists and corporators have welcomed the action taken by Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal commissioner Ashish Sharma against erring civic staff and officials. They said the civic chief should continue to act tough against such employees for the betterment of residents.

According to the PCMC figures, Sharma has suspended 25 staff on charges of corruption and dereliction of duty in three years, besides ordering departmental inquiry against 59 others for neglecting duties.

PCMC water supply department’s junior engineer, Navnath More, was suspended recently by Sharma for allegedly giving him wrong feedback. The civic chief has suspended seven officers, four clerks, two servants, one driver, one computer operator, one sanitation staffer and a worker. The officers include chief clerks Jalinder Garade and Laxman Kale, medical superintendents Raju Bed and Rajkumar Waghmare, medical officer Abhijit Mahadar and nurse incharge Narayan Anbhule.

Sharma also issued orders to set an inquiry against former PCMC chief medical officer, Dr Nagkumar Kunchagi, for violating rules in purchasing vehicles required for nala cleaning.

The president of Right to Information Act forum of Pimpri-Chinchwad, Shriram Pande, said it was necessary to take action against staff found to be corrupt or neglecting duty.

Pande said, “I don’t know whether the action was taken in time or not. But Sharma’s action is welcome.” Corporator Maruti Bhapkar said the other civic staff would now at least think twice before committing any such act.
