A modest effort has been launched by the city-based Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) and its state branch in Mumbai to collect relief funds for the victims of the recent tsunami and earthquake in Japan.

Speaking to DNA, the society’s Pune district branch honorary secretary, RV Kulkarni, said donations received from three software companies so far have been transferred to the Red Cross national headquarters in Delhi.

“Mostly info-tech companies and corporate houses are contributing, and they have even asked their employees to donate. One IT firm has donated Rs3 lakh. Individual contributions are also forthcoming in a big way and the response is overwhelming in supporting the affected country,” said Kulkarni.

He said the fund drive was initiated after several citizens called up expressing their wish to send help and to donate. The society’s Maharashtra branch honorary secretary, Homai Modi said, “The donations are being accepted while keeping in mind that Japan has not asked for any official help. Therefore, only cheques and cash are being accepted.”

The donations from India are being forwarded to the International Red Cross Society to ensure that the donation reaches victims. So far, Mumbai and Pune are actively involved in this process from Maharashtra.

For donations, contact the Indian Red Cross Society on 26058974, or email  ircspune@gmail.com. Cheques may be drawn in favour of ‘Indian Red Cross Society Maharashtra State Branch’.
