The office of the district collector has decided to keep all files in the revenue department open for inspection every Friday. This was communicated to the office of the state information commissioner (SIC), Vijay Kuvalekar, by the tehsildar (revenue) on July 30.

The tehsildar, who also acts as the appellate authority for the revenue branch, has apprised the SIC about this decision while answering to a notice from SIC on a complaint filed by RTI (right to Information Act, 2005) activist, Vijay Kumbhar.

The activist had asked for information regarding permission granted to various townships in Pune district. He had alleged that the information was denied to him as the public information officer (PIO) has not replied to him on time.

While denying Kumbhar’s allegation, the tehsildar had pointed out to recent discussions held between the SIC and the district collector, in which the collector had decided to keep all files for the department open on Friday for inspection.

People desirous of  inspecting the files can contact the PIOs.
Kumbhar congratulated the district collector, Vikas Deshmukh, for taking the bold step. “A similar concept is being followed in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and has been quite successful. I would request the collector to ensure that the proper spirit of his order is carried out by his officers,” he said.

The then municipal commissioner, Mahesh Zagade, had issued orders to all PMC departments to keep open their files for inspection every Monday from 3pm to 5pm. This has evoked good response from citizens . Also, the number of applications received by the civic body under RTI has gone down.
