Diabetologists of United Diabetes Forum (UDF) agree that modern management of diabetes, whichever type it may be, needs to be highly individualised, tailor-made, delivered promptly and aggressively.

"There is no clinical or management similarity between two diabetes patients and there is no magic formula for all," secretary of the forum Dr Rajiv Kovil, who is conducting seminars and workshops today simultaneously at 30 different locations in Maharashtra, said.

The patient education-seminars-cum-workshops is held under the theme 'Diabetes Prevention and Management', Kovil said adding the forum aims to bring about a consensus in 'Diabetes Practice and Management' and play an important role in preventing the spread of diabetes and the cardiovascular pandemic in India, he said.

"'Diabetes and its complications' is tagged as "modern world's biggest health scourge" and the Indian context is the worst of all, as it holds the dubious distinction of having the highest number of diabetic cases in the world – about 40 million people in the country are suffering from diabetes," Kovil said.

Recent figures released by US-based International Diabetic Federation (IDF) state that India will continue to hold the Number 1 position with 70 million cases by 2025, he said.

Kovil said, "Facing the challenge of addressing the pandemic in India is tough economically, socially and mentally. There is an urgent need to emphasise on the recent advancements in diabetes management in terms of patient education, initiation, improved outcomes and beyond, and highlight how new techniques will revolutionise the way patients in India manage their diabetes."
