When Zubair Khan set up his own television production house recently, he had not imagined that he would soon be grappling with a problem that is not uncommon in the Indian entertainment industry.

The producers of Kar Dhamaal Gujarat, a talent show that Khan and his crew conceptualised and executed, have allegedly refused to compensate the 10-member team. “We have worked on the show right from scratch. And when the show is ready to be aired, the producers are trying to cheat us by refusing payment, collectively amounting to Rs10 lakh,” Khan told DNA.

The show is being produced by Bollywood composer Bappi Lahiri's entertainment company B-Blink. Lahiri's son Bappa and filmmaker KC Bokadia's son Amit are handling the company's operations.

“We were working on the show since March. And when I realised that basics such as the profit margins were not being shared with us, I asked Bappa to arrange for the team's fees,” Khan added, alleging that he and his crew were then unceremoniously dumped on June 1. He said that he is now contemplating criminal and legal action against the producers.

“The concept and execution is all mine. They cannot kick me out without notice or compensation for the work my team and I have put into the show,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bappa has alleged that the team had walked out of the show on their own, causing the producers losses to the tune Rs20 lakh. And hence, his company was not obliged to pay them. However, he added that he would be willing to discuss a settlement with individual team members.

Bappa has also alleged that Khan had overstated the budget and provided fictitious bills and list of people working for him. “Khan is nothing but a publicity seeker and we will sort out the matter on our own,” he told DNA.
