A day after the mishap monorail mishap in Chembur, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has ordered a three-fold inquiry into the disaster that claimed two lives. Additional metropolitan commissioner Ashwini Bhide said the contractor, the consultant as well as an independent committee comprising experts appointed by MMRDA would probe into the mishap.

Two workers were killed and three injured when the crane they were working on toppled at the construction site in Chembur.
Bhide said that the beams between pillars no 64 and 65 were on one of the sharpest curves of the 21 km monorail route. “This area falls in the phase between Bhakti Park and Mysore colony. The accident happened when one of the curvature beams tilted towards right and fell onto the curvature beam on the other side. While the beam on the right side fell down, the tilted beam was hanging between the two pillars leaving one of the two deceased under it,” she said.

She added that the exact cause of the mishap will be known after detailed investigations and  preliminary findings suggests that the accident was due to failure of the support system which is used while erecting and fixing the beams between the pillars.

She said adequate compensation has been paid to the families of the deceased. While eyewitnesses alleged that there were lack of sufficient safety equipment at the site, Bhide said the contractor-Larson and Tubro- were using all the necessary safety equipments. When asked about the inquiry, Bhide said that the technicians of the contractor L&T will carry out a detailed safety audit of the entire alignment and particularly the areas that have sharp turns. “Moreover, officials of the Louis Berger consultants will also carry out an independent inquiry into the matter. Both L&T and Louis Berger will complete their inquiry and submit the report by Tuesday. MMRDA also is appointing a committee of experts, which will also carry out an independent inquiry.”
