The civic body once again reiterated its stand to set up a fire station in Priyadarshini Park.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to present the facts and convince the court about the importance of a fire station at Malabar Hill so that the court lifts the stay order it had passed on the construction.

Senior civic officials, who are preparing an affidavit to prove the corporation’s stand to construct the fire station at Priyadarshini Park, said, “There is no fire station in the vicinity of Malabar Hill and Napeansea Road. Most of the high-profile residents including chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, other ministers, babus and industrialists are staying at Malabar Hill. They have been staying without any fire safety since many years.

There are many high-rise residential and commercial towers coming up in Malabar Hill and Napeansea Road. And, it is the responsibility of the BMC to look after the safety of the residents, he added.

As per the developmental planning sheet, a 6,000 sq m plot has been reserved for the fire station. “Malabar Hill residents are asking us to use the adjoining plot. However, we can not have the fire station there as that plot will be used to construct the freeway to connect Malabar Hill and Worli,” he said. CD Chaure, D ward officer, said that even if the corporation decides to construct the fire station on the MSRDC plot, it will not be feasible.

DNA first reported on January 5 that Priyadarshini Park will be divided to set up a fire station. After the BMC order to surrender a portion of the park for the fire station, the residents moved court and got a stay.

Once the court lifts the stay order, the BMC will procure the land and start the construction. “We just need to take care of a few formalities to take back the plot from the Malabar Hill Citizens Forum,” said Uday Tatkare, chief fire officer.
The city has 33 fire stations and nine plots have been earmarked for more.
