Police nab six for dacoity within 96 hours in Thane

Thane rural police has arrested six alleged decoits within 96 hours, police said today.

Addressing reporters here, Thane district superintendent of police-rural, Madukar Pandye said that it was on the night of March 29 that the four dacoits barged into the house of one Vasant G Patil, 60, in Aundhe village of Vikhramgadh taluk and looted by threatening the inmates with choppers and fire arms. They also fired in the air to scare the inmates.

The gang robbed them of golden ornaments, mobile phones and cash, all worth around Rs2.45-lakh. He said that within minutes of the crime, local police arrived on the scene and chased the desperadoes, who finally escaped in the jungle.

However, the police could nab one of them in the early hours after a massive combing operation which lasted through out the night, and one of the accused was nabbed from the woods. Upon interrogating him and eliciting information, the police arrested the other three last evening, he said. The arrested are: Dashratha Kallappa Jamadar, 20, of Papdi, Vasai, Ramesh Shankar Shinde, 27, Ravi Rohidas Shivtare, 19, and Manish Ramesh Pande, 22.

According to reports, one of the relatives of Patil, Bhai Mohan Bhoir, had helped the four dacoits to indulge in the crime and he has also been arrested.

The police arrested the sixth person, Amarjeet Jajaraj Singh, 52 of Sativali, who provided fire arms to the criminals. Singh had got the fire arms from UP, the SP said adding that the police were in the process of probing that from where in UP the firearms were procured.

A visibly moved Patil told reporters that he could not express the moment when the desperadoes entered his house and at the point of sharp weapons and fire arms looted them. "They held my one-and-a-half-year grandson by the hand and placing the revolver on his head demanded the valuables from us. At that moment, we were helpless as they had also snatched our mobile phones. But my daughter, with courage, called the police from the other cell.

Pandey said that the police team was lauded by the complainant who was thrilled by the police action and arrest of the accused within 96 hours and the entire operation was named as 'Mission - 96.'

He said that keeping in view of the performance of the local and crime branch team of nabbing the criminals, the police staff had been recommended for rewards.
