Activists of the Pune district National Student’s Union of India (NSUI) have accused the Pune police cyber cell of not heeding complaints.

The NSUI activists are upset that defamatory images of Congress president, Sonia Gandhi and prime minister, Manmohan Singh are doing the rounds on social networking sites like Facebook.

According to NSUI city president, Atul Mhaske, all complaints to the cell asking them to probe into the matter have fallen on deaf ears.

“The images are circulating via email and on social networking sites like Orkut and Facebook. People are tagging the images and passing rude comments. It is not right to insult our national leaders in this manner. However, when we approached the city cyber cell to lodge a first information report against the offenders, the cyber cell did not take cognisance of it.”

Mhaske said they have been running from pillar to post for the past 15 days.

When contacted, deputy commissioner of police (cyber cell), Sanjay Shinde, initially said he was not aware of such a complaint. He, however, told DNA later that the matter was being probed into and the social networking sites were being contacted in the matter.
