Police commissioner Arup Patnaik has asked superintendent of police BG Shekhar and a US-based computer expert to see if details about senior citizens in Mumbai can be taken off www.hamarisuraksha.com. He fears that the data may fall in the wrong hands if someone manages to hack into the website.

The website was inaugurated by former police commissioner D Sivanandhan in September 2009. The intention was that voluminous data gathered by the site would help the police crack crimes against senior citizens. However, the police are now trying to disassociate themselves from the initiative.

“It is not an official website of the Mumbai Police. The two websites of the city police are www.mumbaipolice.org and www.cybercellmumbai.com.

It contains personal data about senior citizens such as their names, residential addresses and telephone numbers. There is a possibility that anti-social elements may hack into the website and use the details to perpetrate crimes,” said Patnaik.
He added: “The website has no direct association with the Mumbai Police. We have other initiatives such as Elderline and our own citizen grievance helpline numbers. We want to take the information provided by senior citizens off the website and have asked a few experts to look into the matter.”

In its privacy policy, the website states: “Hamari Suraksha shall endeavour to undertake all reasonable steps to safeguard the security and confidentiality of all information you provide to us. Notwithstanding any contained herein, you accept the inherent security implications of disclosing information online and shall under no circumstances hold us responsible for any breach of security or disclosure of information.”
