The semi-finals, the third-place playoff and the final. DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai, will host all top four games of the Indian Premier League (IPL), courtesy the bomb blasts near Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore, on Saturday.

The Navi Mumbai police are busy taking all possible measures to avert any untoward incident during the matches — all of them promising to be houseful affairs. More so with home team Mumbai Indians in the fray.

A police source said that around 2,000 cops will be deployed on guard duty during the matches. To meet the huge requirement, policemen have been roped in from forces in Mumbai, Thane, Thane (rural), Pune (rural) and Raigad.

“We were prepared for this because DY Patil Stadium was going to host the IPL final. Now, we have to extend the same security over four days,” a senior officer of the Navi Mumbai police said on condition of anonymity.

“In terms of security, we have done our best. I am sure there will be no problem during the matches. We have started nakabandis at various parts of the city, and are also checking hotels, lodges and religious places to ensure maximum security,” he said.

On Sunday, immediately after the IPL authorities decided to shift the matches to Navi Mumbai, the police went into action. “Officers from the state Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) have been asked to keep tabs on anti-social elements. Other units of the police, too, have been put on high alert,” an ATS officer said.

Quick Response Teams (QRT), SRPF and bomb squads, too, will be present at the IPL venue. The management of DY Patil Stadium has also arranged for private security guards, who will man every entrance.

A source in the home department said, “IPL matches have already been played at Brabourne and DY Patil stadiums. We have our mechanism in place.”

Exercising caution, he added, “We, however, cannot take anything for granted. We will have to alert our nodal agencies in the home department to ensure there is no untoward incident at the venue.”

Minister of state for home Ramesh Bagwe on Sunday pledged the government’s support in providing foolproof security at the DY Patil Stadium. Bagwe said, “Mumbai and its adjoining areas are under high security 24x7. For the matches we will definitely go the extra mile to scale up security for people’s safety.”

Chief minister Ashok Chavan and home minister RR Patil were supposed to hold a meeting on Monday to discuss the security preparedness.
