A public hearing for one of the most controversial flyovers in the city on Pedder Road will be conducted on Monday by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and the island city collector.

While the Pedder Road Residents’ Association (PRRA) is making all out efforts to point out the loopholes in the making of the flyover, officials of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) are confident of tackling all their queries.

The flyover has been delayed due to pressure from the residents’ association and the elite people staying in the area. “Just because the Mohammad Ali Road on which the JJ flyover is constructed does not have any elite residents on its list, the flyover has come up without any obstacles. We are confident that once constructed, the Pedder Road flyover will ease out traffic woes. Even the average speed of vehicles here will be 40-50 kmph,” said an official of the corporation.

Recently, the MSRDC announced that it will be putting air purifiers, view cutters and sound barriers on the flyover. However, the PRRA has raised doubts about the project.

“What is the point in first building a flyover which is going to create all problems and then counter it? How can MSRDC justify the expense on a flyover, when their own engineers have been repeatedly saying that the maximum speed on the flyover will be around 15-20 kmph. This is the same speed, which prevails on the route today,” claimed PRRA through a written communication sent to DNA.

The last hearing was disrupted. MSRDC official said adequate security measures have been taken this time.
