Many people, including her family, scoffed at her for years, but that did not deter Pune-based ophthalmologist Dr Mehra Shrikhande from writing a book on her beliefs. The book ‘Paranormal experiences — Beyond the realms of reason’, launched in Mumbai on Friday, is the fruition of six years of labour, a time that Dr Shrikhande spent studying the paranormal and analysing the experiences narrated by hundreds of people.

“I am of the view that the soul is immortal and survives in another dimension of space and time after death,” said the 51-year-old doctor. By profession, wedded to the exactitude of science which does not leave room for grey areas, she got over her scepticism during her spiritual quest through meditation, her own experiences with auto writing, the ouija board and the planchett, and past life regression therapy, which took her to ten of her previous lives.

“I also spoke to people who has survived heart attacks and accidents and had had out-of-body experiences,” said Dr Shrikhande. “I even spent time in haunted places.”

She got the idea of writing the book after reading Dr Raymond Moody’s Life After Life.

Dr Shrikhande now wants to do some serious research, perhaps at the Metaphysics Institute in Vishakhapatnam. “I’d also like to form a society of people in Pune and Mumbai who can meet every month to share their views,” she said.

Shrikhande's book — priced at Rs150 — addresses everything in the paranormal world of metaphysics.
