One life lost, culprit out on Rs15,000 bond

The police on Sunday arrested the driver, who on Saturday night lost control of the Tata Indica as he left a bhoomipujan function at Samta Nagar in Kandivli (E), killing one person and injuring nearly 13 others. Of the 13 injured, three sustained fractured limbs.

Identified as Manoj Kushwaha, the 27-year-old driver was on Sunday produced before a court that granted him bail after a Rs15,000 bond. Apparently, the car belongs to contractor Satish Tate, who had also gone to attend the bhoomipujan. However, Tate left the venue on a motorcycle, asking Kushwaha to bring the car home.

Police said the deceased, Mallikarjun Unchali, 48, lived in the Wadarpada slum of Kandivli (East), while the three people who sustained fractures were identified as Rahul Tarange, Kanaram Prajapati and Anand Makhdum. Others who sustained minor injuries, including Ankush Lotekar, Rajkumar Gupta, Mangalaprasad Chavan, Sandeep Yadav, Lipnesh Tomar, Akhilesh Singh, Anil Yadav. Vasim Potna, who were all discharged after being administered first-aid.

A class X student, Tarange is recuperating from head injuries in the Sanchayati hospital. His mother Savita said, “He had gone to the bhoomipujan function along with his cousins, who rushed home to inform us immediately after the accident took place. By the time we reached there, a local MLA had already driven him to the hospital in his car.”

Locals noted down the car’s number and traced the Tate residence to arrest Kushwaha under the charge of causing death due to rash and negligent driving.

According to Samta Nagar police, which is investigating the  case, the bhoomipujan was carried out by Ruchipriya Developers for an SRA project in an open plot at Hanuman Nagar in Kandivli (East). The local resident and local political members of the area were present at the function.
