In a major relief to lakhs of students, the Joint Admission Board (JAB) on August 5 finalised the format for the advanced test to be conducted on June 2, 2013.
There was speculation that the advanced test for nearly 1.5 lakh shortlisted IIT aspirants will be subjective in nature, as demanded by a section of the IIT faculty. It was also expected to be tougher. The JAB decision has cleared the confusion.
“The format of the advanced test will be objective with multiple choices for answers. It will be conducted in two sessions on the same day. The marks for both the sections will not be revealed,” said an IIT official who attended the JAB meeting.
“All other aspects of the old pattern will continue for 2013. This includes making ORS (optical response sheet) answer-sheets available online for students. Even the latest scheme of allowing candidates to take home a copy of their answer-sheets will be followed. The decisions are only for the 2013 JEE. The format and other details are subject to change in subsequent years,” the official said.
“This is a huge relief for students. They start preparing for IIT-JEE after their 10th standard. It would have had been unfair if they had to appear for something totally new,” said Praveen Tyagi, director, IITian’s PACE, a coaching class for IIT-JEE aspirants.
“Had they introduced a subjective pattern, a majority of our preparation would have gone waste. Though the concepts for objective and subjective questions are the same, the types of sums and the manner of solving them differ,” said an IIT-aspirant from Kandivli. “We have appeared for several practice tests to check our timing with regard to the objective format. My friends and I began taking subjective tests after there was talk that there could be a change in the format. The JAB decision is a big relief.”
Admission to IITs will be decided based on the candidate’s performance in the advanced test. The candidate must also be placed among the top 20% scorers of his/her respective board to be eligible for a seat in any IIT.
