Amid reports of a section of outgoing corporators not returning the laptops issued to them by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the present batch of councillors have now sought that the civic body make provisions for iPads for “better communication”. Mayor Sunil Prabhu is said to have written to the civic administration seeking the devices, loaded with a better technology.
Of the total 227 former councillors, 64 are yet to deposit their laptops with the corporation. The laptops, each costing around Rs 53,000, were distributed nearly three years ago. The move was aimed at helping corporators communicate better with people. The coroprators could mail meeting agendas and public issue work orders from their laptops, thus saving them the time to reach the BMC headquarters every time.
“During a meeting of group leaders, it was discussed that corporators be provided with iPads instead of laptops as they are easier to carry around and technologically more sound. Also, the iPads cost nearly the same as laptops. So, I have sent a letter asking the municipal administration in this regard,” Prabhu said.
However, it may not be an easy deal, technically speaking. For, the BMC will need to equip every iPad with a SAP programme, which it uses in its daily work, before corporators can use it for official purposes. For this, the BMC will need to procure additional licences, costing Rs1 lakh for each device. “I have asked the civic administration to check if licenses can be procured at cheaper rates,” the mayor added.
