Married for 14 months, when 2003 blasts accused Adnan Mulla expressed his desire to go on a honeymoon to Mahableshwar, the Bombay high court immediately turned down his request.

On Friday, a division bench of Justice NH Patil and Justice RY Ganoo rejected his plea on the grounds that the trial was pending and the charges levelled against Mulla were of serious nature.

“The offence is so serious that no chance can be taken at any stage,” said P Hingorani, additional public prosecutor.

The Mumbai Police Crime Branch arrested Mulla on June 6, 2003, for his alleged involvement in a series of blasts — one outside Mumbai Central railway station on December 6, 2002; another near Vile Parle station on January 27, 2003; and the train blast at Mulund on March 13, 2003. According to the prosecution, Mulla was driving the vehicle that was used by the other accused to commission the blasts.

Mulla was to get married 19 days after he was put behind bars.
After being lodged in jail for seven years, the high court granted him bail on February 2, 2010.

But, the high court imposed a restriction that he would have to report to the Padgah police station in Thane district every day and he cannot leave the area without the senior police inspector’s permission.

On April 24, 2010, Mulla finally got married to his fiancée. But till date the couple has not left Padgah village even for a day because of the court restrictions.

In his petition, Mulla said: “My wife is insisting that we go for a honeymoon to Mahableshwar for seven days. To maintain cordial relations with my wife and continue a peaceful matrimonial life, I should be allowed to go for my honeymoon.”

Mulla also relied on a special Prevention of Terrorism Act (Pota) court order passed on May 18, 2010, which allowed Farhan Khot co-accused in the 2003 blasts case, to visit Mahableshwar with his newly married wife for seven days.

Though the bench accepted the prosecution’s arguments, it rejected Mulla’s plea.
