The next decade is of electronic vehicles, said the chief of strategy and technology at Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles, Chetan Maini, on Saturday.

He was delivering the keynote address at the Innovations 2011, the annual event organised by IIT Bombay Alumni Association (Pune Chapter) in association with Harbinger Group.

In its fifth year now, a total of 14 innovations were exhibited during the event held on the Persistent Systems premises on Senapati Bapat Road.

Maini said, “The government has recently given 20% subsidy to all electronic vehicles. This will further accelerate the growth of these vehicles in the country.”

Giving an insight on how the electric car Reva was developed in 1994, he said, “We give strong emphasis on what the consumer wants. To get an insight into the minds of consumers, we have a special committee which does all the thinking and the product is designed based on their suggestions.”

Commenting on the shortfalls of electric vehicles, Maini said people fear that the battery would end in the middle of journey. “A system needs to be developed where the consumer gets the message on cellphone that the battery needs recharge. A light would beep in the vehicle, say when the battery can run for another 15km or so,” Maini said.

Maini said innovation is a culture which needs to be created in young minds. “Innovation can give us fun and futuristic products,” he said.

The one-day event showcased various innovations, which included Gradient Vector Method by IIT Bombay’s B Ravi used for fast and accurate prediction of shrinkage defects in metal castings.

Plastic gas tanks for biogas plants developed by IIT Bombay faculty Ajay Chandak is also on display. The conventional drum biogas uses fabricated mild steel tanks, but these are heavy and not very cost effective. On the contrary, plastic gas holders possess pockets on hood and side walls where concrete blocks are added to boost biogas pressure.

Other innovations on display were a mobile safe water unit, apple-a-day method for diabetes control, digital microscope, Vegayan telecom network management system, micro-spinning, sanitary napkin making machine and the Silent Observer technology to prevent sex selection at birth.
