The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested a man for allegedly preparing bogus power of attorney for his neighbour’s flat and selling it to another person for Rs65 lakh.

The flat originally belonged to a NRI woman who works at Indian Airlines.

The accused has been identified as Niranjan Jayantilal Shah. Shah was arrested on Tuesday and has been remanded in police custody till November 20 by a local court.

According to the police, victim Linda Tap works is employed with Indian Airlines at a senior level and owns a flat at Vandana Apartments in Juhu.

“Due to her work, Tap used to stay out of the country most of the time, and hence her apartment keys were left with her neighbour Niranjan Shah. She had not been keeping well since the past few months and has been staying abroad. She was under medical treatment there,” said an EOW official who is investigating the case.

The official explained that Tap sold the flat to one Ajit Prasad for Rs65 lakh to get more money for her medical expenses. All the necessary documentation for the sale and purchase of the said flat was done, the police said.

“When Prasad went to occupy the flat some time ago, he was shocked to discover that a family had already occupied the house. On making inquiries, Prasad learnt that the flat had been sold to them by Niranjan Shah for Rs65 lakh. On checking the flat documents, Prasad learnt that a bogus power of attorney for Tap had been made by Shah,” the officer said.

Prasad then registered a complaint of cheating at the Juhu police station. The complaint was then sent to EOW for investigations. “We are interrogating Shah to ascertain how he managed to get bogus signatures of Tap on the power of attorney. In this case, two more persons Surendra Agrawal and Rajesh Agrawal are shown as accused. They have not been arrested yet,” the officer said.
