City president of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Vandana Chavan on Saturday opposed the proposed skywalk project in the city saying that the project should not be implemented if it is not in the comprehensive mobility plan (CMP) of the city.

She was speaking to the media after meeting municipal commissioner Mahesh Pathak along with corporators of the party to discuss various civic issues.

She said that even though the CMP of the city is not approved yet, such controversies like skywalk will not arise if this plan is explained to corporators of all parties.

Incidentally, NCP corporator and MLC Anil Bhosale had insisted on approval of the skywalk project when the proposal was put before the general body (GB) of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

The proposal for building a skywalk project in the city is presently pending before the GB. Group leaders of various political parties had called for presentation by the administration on the proposal of skywalk.

The standing committee had approved the proposal of skywalk on May 19 and it was put before the GB for approval on the same day. While the proposal was pending for approval before the GB, some members of the standing committee moved a proposal to reconsider the skywalk project in a few days. Subsequently, the standing committee cancelled the project while the original proposal was still pending before the GB.

During the meeting of group leaders of various parties, most of them, except one of Shiv Sena, had shown readiness to consider approval of the project. On this background, NCP city president on Saturday opposed the project. As NCP is a major partner of ruling alliance, opposition expressed by Chavan has gained importance.

The standing committee on May 19 approved a proposal to build two skywalks for pedestrians from Shivajinagar to PMC building and from Mahatma Phule Mandai (market) to Swargate.

The plan would be carried out on design, build, own, operate and transfer (DBOOT) basis at a cost of Rs100 crore while awarding advertising rights for 38 years on these skywalks. The length of the skywalk from Shivajinagar to PMC building would be 1.65 km.
