The endocrinology department of BYL Nair Hospital, in a study proved that women with Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)have lower levels of adiponectin than others. This is further associated with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
“Each patient of PCOS is different. With this study we might be looking at a surrogate marker for the disease,” said Dr Premlata Vathakavi, head of department, Endocrinology, BYL Nair Hospital. Dr Sachin Mittal conducted his research under the guidance of Dr Varthakavi. He examined 66 patients, of which 33 had PCOD.
“The only difference between the groups was that the PCOD cases had higher levels of androgens which led to problems like irregular menstrual cycles, excessive hair growth, acne, infertility and others,” said Dr Mittal.
