Students of Podar School, Santa Cruz, will need to watch their strokes as their teachers will soon be able to read between the lines, quite literally.

Since a person’s handwriting reveals a lot about his or her personality, teachers will now receive training in graphology so that they can tell if your child is suffering from depression or stress, and identify negative traits like delinquency, addictions at an early age.

Handwriting analysis or graphology is the study of a person’s character through the medium of handwriting. It is based on a general style of writing, the formation of letters, the alignment and space between words and lines etc. While a trained graphologist can read various nuances from health issues, morality, sexuality, past experiences, hidden talents and mental problems, an untrained person too can pick up certain signs from an individual’s handwriting, say experts.

Podar Institute of Education, Santa Cruz, will hold a series of workshops for teachers, the first of which will be on January 22, 10am to 1pm. The workshop will equip the teachers to decode the implications behind simple strokes of words. “Graphology is a powerful tool for educators in understanding the intellectual, emotional, social and developmental aspects of children,” said Sejal Mehta, a psychotherapist and graphologist, during a seminar on ‘Inspiring Early Childhood Teachers’ at Juhu.

Moreover, these workshops will also train teachers in graphotherapy, which helps teachers to change children’s handwriting at any age. This acts as a check on delinquency and addictions, builds their concentration, memory and attention span. “In their formative stages, it helps to shape their destinies, enhance their strengths and potentials and rectify their deficits and weaknesses. Handwriting analysis is a good tool because it gives teachers a better idea of what’s going inside the child’s mind,” said Swati Popat, director of Podar Education Network.
Mehta highlighted the benefits of graphology for teachers.

“Parents these days often put their children under pressure for performing well without realising the effect it has on their wards at the psychosocial level. Also, the fear of ridicule prevents children from sharing their insecurities with their parents and teachers. This is where graphology can play a role in understanding the children better.”
