MUMBAI: Mumbai’s search for a ‘mnemonic’ name has ended with the shortlisting of four logos (two in English and two in Marathi) and two tag lines suggested by Mumbaikars themselves.

Rekha Pamani Gulati got Rs25,000 as prize money for her logo with the catchphrase ‘Made in Mumbai’. Her suggestion is one of the two logos that will remain associated with the city for several hundred years.

Same is the case with Mithun Banerjee, whose logo shows ‘Mumbai Mumbai’ written upside down with the catchphrase ‘never down’ to define the city’s indomitable spirit.

The two selected entries in Marathi that won Minal Joshi and Sharad Deshpande Rs25,000 each, pay tribute to the heritage, education and business capital image of the city and an all included message through a logo defining the city’s cosmopolitan social fabric.

In addition to these logos, two tag lines (in English and Marathi) that were selected include ‘Life uninterrupted’ suggested by Pradeep Shindolkar and ‘Jeevachi Mumbai’ (heartthrob Mumbai). Both entries were awarded a cash prize of Rs 20,000.

All six entries will now be re-scrutinised to select a single English and Marathi logo that combine with the tag line to make up the mnemonic image of the city.

The state government had invited suggestions from citizens for the mnemonic representation for Mumbai during the recently concluded Mumbai festival.

A senior secretariat official told DNA, “With the emphasis being on developing Mumbai as a global megapolis, we thought it appropriate to have a brand new mnemonic name for it. Globally, this is a common practice (New York is known as the Big Apple). We are not looking for a new name but hoping to create a brand logo using Mumbai’s name.”
